WSO Data Use Policy

It is our intention to promote the use of synoptic data from the John M. Wilcox Solar Observatory at Stanford University for primary and correlative analyses in solar physics and solar-terrestrial physics research.

If you use WSO data available here on the WWW, published in internal reports, or provided to the WDC-A for publication in Solar Geophysical Data, we ask only three things:

• that you notify us.
• that you acknowledge the source of the data.
• that you send us. a copy of resulting research reports and papers.

We are pleased to be able to provide synoptic data in machine-readable form and frequently prepare specialized data products/formats in response to requests. In order to assure the integrity of the data, the applicability of our data to specific investigations, and to avoid duplication of research efforts, we encourage you to contact Todd Hoeksema.

The most appropriate references to describe the observatory and its data are:

• For the instrument generally and the mean field: Scherrer et al., Solar Physics, 1977
• For the photospheric synoptic maps: Duvall et al., Solar Physics, 1977
• For the coronal field synoptic maps: Hoeksema et al., J.Geophys.Res., 1983
• For the radial field harmonic coefficients: Zhao & Hoeksema, Solar Physics, 1993
